Šimić in a quandry…

April 29th, 2006 | By: Soze | No Comments »

Some blogs ago I mused about the lack of playing time our back line seem to be receiving due to injury or otherwise. Dario Šimić was one of those players. He has been relegated to the bench, or the bleachers, at AC Milan for the better part of this year because Stam, Costacurtu and Maldini have been given preference.

Recently, Šimić publically revealed his willingness to move on from the club. “Nothing against the players or coaching staff, we are all a big family. I just wish to play more” he said.

A few days ago, an offer was presented to him by Fiorentina. “I am satisfied with the financial aspect of the deal as well as the fact that Fiorentina is a big club, the biggest after Milan, Juventus and Inter. I have a chance to be playing in the Champions League” he said.

The quandry presented to Šimić is that he has been living in Milan for four years. His family is settled and he likes his life there. At the end of this season, Stam is leaving, Maldini has been operated on and is probably not coming back next year and Costacurtu is 40 years old. This is a prime opportunity for the Croatian midfielder to step into a contibuting role at AC, but not guaranteed. In Fiorentina, he is also not guaranteed a starting role because they have a full roster of midfielders and defenders..either of which positions Šimić is comfertable playing.

What to do? What to do?….apparently Šimić does not know either. When asked, his only respose was “Only one thing is for certain, I don;t wanna sit on the bench.”
