Croatian Jersey-gate

June 2nd, 2006 | By: Soze | 10 Comments »

Two rowsThank you Bob for stealing my blog topic. I do have one thing to add to this fiasco…a picture of the additional two rows on the jersey. And Bob, I’m glad to see that this little addition has revised your opinion of what most of the world has thought since the beginning. Croatia has the best jersey in any tournament they play!!

Croatia will continue using the old kits for the next two friendlies and will revert to using the new, FIFA sanctioned ones for the game againsst Brazil on June 13. The new jersey’s are already waiting for the NT at their base camp in Bad Brückenau, but unfortunately, the short time frame did not give the manufacturers enough time to get them out for the general public to purchase.

Soze,

I’m with you, I’ve always liked the checkerboard jersey, although it should be front AND back. Only one like it in the world. I’ve long wanted the US to come with a really bold design based on our flag, but alas ours is pretty dull (hopefully our play won’t be the same!).

Stuart,

The boldest the US have come is their shirt at the 94 WC. I wasn’t a huge fan of it but at least, like the Croatia shirt, it was distinct.

Didn’t that kit have denim incorporated into it?

Simply Amazing. They should put “Sepp was Here” on the back of the jersey above the new stripe to meet the requirements.

It is unbelievable. About 2 weeks ago, I read those fifa regulations and the first thing that popped in my mind was, that the croatian jerseys might not fight them.

I wanted to start a fun thread somewhere like: “Croatia threatened to be thrown out of world cup” or so.

And now, FIFA really has forbidden them.

Unbelievable.

Hi, I’ll preface this by saying I’m new to the game of football (yes, I’m American), so if the answer to my questions is obvious, please be kind.

First: Why does this rule exist?
Second: If the Croatia jerseys are 30% too white, how does this not apply to teams like the USA, Germany or England who have nearly entirely white jerseys?

I’ve seen this item posted on several blogs but have yet to find an explanation for these seemingly obvious questions.

Many thanks for any clarifications!

Well Croatian checkerboard jersey is actually connected with US soccer team. First Croatian official match was against United States back in 1990 just before war (Croatia 2 - 1 USA - Zagreb, Croatia; 17 October 1990). US team was in jersey with stars, so someone said why not checkers for Croatian team….rest is history!

Croatian jersey is officially red, so it must contain at least 50% red colour on jersey

i think that the Croatian jersey is so unreal, the checkers give it that amazing look… every other countries is the same and very simple. the Croatian jersey stands out and and is a resemblance to their national flag.
