A Brazilian Point of View.

May 31st, 2006 | By: Soze | 11 Comments »

Since I was on the Globo webpage, I thought I’d check out their section on the Croatian Team. Some nice videos and objective assesments of our squad by their jounalists. Most of the stories, however, were posted from the Newswire feeds that everyone else has access to as well.

There was one little box on the right side of the page of interest though. It was an opinion poll to the Brazilian public.

The question is:
Can Croatia astonish Brazil in their first game of the WC?
The poll so far is :
45% of readers chose: Yes, it is a good selection and in the last friendly Parreira’s team did not win.
55% of readers chose: No, the Brazilian selection is going to begin the World Cup by massacring(beating) the Croats.

A very objective poll if you ask me. The people of Brazil are cautiously optimistic of their side’s chances, and it’s nice to see that a football-great country like Brazil sees us as a worthy opponent.

Well, im glad to see that Brazil are not over confident. I over the past few weeks have had the view that Croatia would beat Brazil, but the closer the Cup comes, the more i think Croatia will get smashed by all three sides in the group :/

I hope this wont be the case ….

Hey Big Wog (love the name), Croatia won’t get smashed by all three sides in the group. In fact I don’t think anyone will get smashed. Brazil are the clear favs, you guys second, Japan third and my boys last.

Saying that, when it comes to match day, any team in this group is capable of beating the other. It will be a lot closer group than people think.

Very close indeed. Most of the discussions here (this blog) have possibly forgotten the threat of Japan. I think the friendly with Germany has proven that they have the ability like any other to make it from this group. Although people should have already known this from their display at the Confederations cup, including the draw with Brazil in the final match (2-2). Watching that match Japan played really well especially in the second half and I’d say Brazil was quite lucky in the end, a Nakamura free kick came off the post and should have been converted.

Of course Brazil got the draw and progressed on goal difference, then went on to thump Argentina 4-1. But my point is that all the teams in this group are of a high standard and no one should be overconfident (I’m not accusing anyone of that btw).

Thats what I really like about this World Cup, probably more than any other - almost every team believes they can get atleast second spot in their group.

We’ll see how my ‘other’ team, Aus, will do against Holland. I think they have a really good squad as well and it will be interesting to see what they can do against them.

We are indeed somewhat worried about Croatia. We surely think that we can win, but a draw would not be a complete surprise. The game against Iran, however, made some people think differently about Croatia.

Japan, however, is being considered more dangerous than Croatia, especially after drawing 2-2 against Germany and playing a solid game.

I think that luck is the main factor but I think that Croatia has enough talent to make it to the finals which I predict they will.

Leonardo, Germany played with a completely depleted team against Japan. They didn’t have 2 of their starting defenceman or Michael Ballack, whom is a bigger factor than many may think.

captain_croatia89:

Sure Germany had some missing players against Japan, but believe… Japan will be a surprise in this Cup. Zico really made a great work in the last few years, almost teaching japanese players how to kick the ball, how to be positioned in the field, even how to defend.

I won’t be surprised if Japan reach the quarter finals or even semi finals.

With all respect Croatia deserves, my bet for this group would be Brazil and Japan.

to anybody who follows football, japan is not a surprise at all — they have been improving constantly.

i changed my predictions and my tip is croatia & japan now — it’s bad enough i have three of my favorite teams in the same group.
