Modric Rumor Revisited

April 11th, 2008 | By: Mario | 9 Comments »

A rumor or rumour (see spelling differences), is “an unverified account or explanation of events circulating from person to person and pertaining to an object, event, or issue in public concern” .

Now the wiki quote above surely does no credit to the rumor that has, truth be told, probably bored to death even the most valiant of Croatian housewives. It’s been going on for about a year and a half now, probably more, and during this period of time Luka has apparently received offers and in turn visited places such as: München, London, Barcelona, Manchester, Newcastle etc. Hell, Mr. Palin himself couldn’t cope with that record.

According to the latest rumors however, which have surfaced in pretty much every media here in Croatia and quite a number abroad (Goal.com & Eurosport among others), Modric’s next destination could be Liverpool, who would eventually beat the likes of Tottenham, Chelsea, Manchester City and Newcastle in the race for player’s signature. The amount of money the Reds would pay for this deal is circulating around €25m.

Yes, it’s a big pile of cash, and YES, he’s worth every penny. So with all the speculation and the impending offers, it’s no longer a secret that the Dinamo captain and no. 10 is playing his last season on the modest Croatian fields, and rightly so. Surely it’s time to move on to bigger and better things. Let’s see who wins the bidding war and claims the most gifted pair of legs Croatian football has had since the likes of Boban and Prosinecki.

*UPDATE*

Well apparently, and this is coming from pretty much every source here in Croatia, Modric is one step closer to striking a deal with Newcastle United. The Mamic brothers (Luka’s agents) flew to Newcastle where talks were held and a legitimate fee was agreed (apparently exceeding €20m). However, talks ended prematurely due to an disagreement over a basic wage Modric would receive in a Newcastle shirt. Newcastle offered €1.2m and Dinamo officials couldn’t settle for that.

Now this info is pretty much common throughout the media, though some sites have gone as far as saying their close sources have confirmed Modric has already “celebrated” his transfer with his family and friends. Only time will tell though, but there’s a serious indication that there is truth in all this, as Dinamo’s spokesman Ado Kozul confirmed earlier today that they are indeed negotiating with Newcastle.

The price is probably a little over exaggarated, as Croatian media tends to have a habit of doing so. But, in terms of quality, I’d rate him as one of the best playmakers around. And he’s only 22, so he can get only better.
Hypothetically, if I had decent foreign budget as most Premiership sides do today, I would spend those €25m on Modric.

Modric is a great playmaker. After Croatia 3-2 beating England, British medie considered Modric as the most important role in this match. I think 20m is acceptable. As a Barca fan, I really want him to replace Deco. I think he has this ability. Euro 2008 will be a big stage for Modric. Just wait and see his show.

I agree Tristan, though in the game against England, many (including me) will tell you that Modric was actually pretty quiet, at least comparing to what kind of performance he usually puts out in a national game. He has stated numerous times now that playing for Barca would be a dream come true, and that he fancies La Liga over the other leagues. It would be fantastic if they signed him.

Modric is a great player. He is fast and has a good sence for teamplay. I just hope he will play for arsenal or in some team in the premier. Maybe 25 million euro is a little to much but hes worth the money.Just watch croatia beating germany poland and austria. modric is going t be a incredible player.
I just feel so bad for eduardo who was playing a great football. :( what might have been. Modric : a small man with a big future :)
