Match Preview: Ukraine

June 6th, 2009 | By: Mario | 5 Comments »

I’m a bit late, but let’s see what we can expect in this pretty much a crucial qualifier.

The stakes: Well it’s a situation rather untypical for us, as we have had much smoother rides in the last couple of qualifying cycles. Basically, anything shorter than victory puts us in real danger of missing out the runners up place behind Capello’s England. Ukraine has the same task in grabbing that 2nd spot but the pressure on the visitors isn’t less burdening due to the fact they can qualify even if they lose in Zagreb. Which of course makes them even more dangerous.

The team: We’ll have to do without Eduardo (again) and Krizanac, while some of our players (Robert Kovac, Kranjcar eventually) will run out in the first 11 despite the ongoing struggle with fitness. We’ve a couple of changes in the lineup, as Runje, who was awarded as the best goalie in Ligue 2 playing for Lens this season, takes the place between the posts at the expense of our usual number one choice Stipe Pletikosa. Latest news from the camp also indicate that Rakitic will start the game after all, despite the initial belief that it was Vukojevic who’ll accompany Ivan Juric at the center of our midfield (Modric would’ve drifted in from the left in this case). Petric will partner Olic in front.

History between the two: We’ve a fairly good head to head score with Ukraine, recording 3 victories & 2 draws in six matches we’ve faced them. It’s worth mentioning that all three of those victories were achieved with us as hosts. Let’s continue this little tradition tonight.

The chemistry: There has been somewhat of a dark cloud hovering over our NT lately, as more and more questions are being asked regarding some of Bilic’s calls lately. Inclusion of Ivan Juric in the side, who’s no doubt a solid player but’ll soon turn 34, persisting with Pranjic on the left back when it’s clear he’s better at going forward then he is at defending. All this accompanied with constant rumors linking Bilic with pretty much every available British club, has left the people wondering will this be the end of Bilic, if we fail to win tonight? Nothing lasts forever obviously, but let’s hope this love lasts through this night at least.

The venue: Maksimir. Sold out so it should be a great atmosphere as always.

The other side:
Catch the Ukranian point of view right here.

The conclusion: Ajmo Hrvatska!

Hey, new to the blog, big fan of how Croatia plays. Tied with Ukraine in points now I believe. I’m actually starting to get a little worried about qualification.

Not to worry Kevin. We tend to do things the hard way. Its still in our hands. Bilic admitted he made a mistake with the lineup he put on the field. Every midfield position player he started was an attacking midfielder and it lead to trouble in the flow of our game. Our next game is on the 19th of August (a lot of time for our boys to realize what we have to do against Belarus). Then 3 weeks later the white rusians come back to Zagreb. We need to get 6 points from those 2 games.

Comments on the game against Ukraine….. I thought Runje had an aweful game. The 1st goal was on him, the cross comes that close to the goal he has to come out and play the ball, he just stood on the line and watched it go by him. The 1st half we were flat. Thats on Bilic and the Federation. Why haven’t we played any friendly games leading up to the qualifliers? Training is one thing but to get our timing right we need game action. Even playing our starters for a half against a decent team before the Ukraine game would have been a huge benefit in my opinion. We better play a friendly before the Belarus game or I will be pissed.

@Kevin:

Welcome :)
Agreed on the worrying part, but Ivan below got it spot on, we tend to do things the hard way.

@Ivan:

I agree. Runje, while having an illustrious club career has yet to show anything on the international scene. Granted, he hasn’t had much chances, but every time he steps up I have a feeling we’ll concede a couple. 4:3 against Izrael always comes to mind.

And you’ve a valid point regarding friendlies, dunno what’s the point of missing out on these. And as we play the first game against Belarus on 12th of August (calendar for friendlies if I’m not mistaken, a weird weird decision), I believe that’s the first action our team will see post Ukraine.
