List For Ukraine

May 18th, 2009 | By: Mario | 4 Comments »

Bilic announced his 24 today, so lets see who goes and who stays:

Goalkeepers: Pletikosa, Runje, Subasic
Defenders: Corluka, Kovac, Simunic, Drpic, Vejic, Cale, Pranjic
Midfielders: Juric, Vukojevic, Pokrivac, J. Leko, Modric, Srna, Kranjcar, Rakitic, Gabric
Forwards: Olic, Petric, Klasnic, Mandžukic i Kalinic

Good news: Kranjcar obviously made the list..and that’s about it.
Bad news: Krizanac is out, Eduardo’s on standby (should be included if he passes a late fitness test), loads of our players look out of shape.

To be a bit more precise: Pletikosa, who is our number one GK choice has been caught napping a few times on the good old Spartak Moscow reserve bench; Rakitic, who looked like he was about to reach a new high this season, has also spend far too many hours loitering on the bench; the likes of Petric and Klasnic look toothless upfront.

But! Yes there’s a butt in all of this, and that’s the fact that some domestic players could be given a shot in all this mess. The likes of Mandzukic & Gabric have been on top form for the last couple of weeks / months and it wouldn’t be a surprise if one of them gets a fair amount of time in our attempt to beat down Ukraine.

But not to get ahead of myself, there’s still loads of time till kick off, so it’s pretty much all a guessing game till then. Who knows, maybe our fortunes take a U-turn in the meantime (Messi a half-Croat? Anyone?).

I doubt much will change in the starting squad. I wouldn’t mind seeing Subasic in the net for us though. This is a big game and I wouldn’t expect Bilic to start anyone with little experience on the international scene.

It will be Olic/Petric up front, Modric/Srna/Kranjcar/(Rakitic or Vukojevic) in the middle and Corluka/Kovac/Simunic/Pranjic along the back.

Agreed regarding Subasic, I was impressed with his performances with Hajduk throughout the season. Bilic surely won’t start neither Gabric or Mandzukic, but we might see one of them play a role in it because both are buzzing with energy, and that might come in handy once fatigue starts creeping in on the game.

Also, and not to my delight, I think Bilic will go with Juric in the middle.
And thanks for commenting btw :)

Petric and Olic were unstoppable for Hamburg. It’s bizarre that they have not been able to transfer this form to international level. Maybe tonight’s the night! For me, the club form of Srna, Modric and Corluka have been very encouraging as well. This game is MASSIVE. Ukraine made it to the quarters of the last world cup and will be cursing the draw which pitted them against two of the best teams in Europe. Come on Croatia!

(P.S. I wouldn’t be surprised to see England drop points in Kazakhstan. The race for top spot is still very much alive in my view)
